What Actually Kills a Garbage Disposal at Thanksgiving

5 minute read | Updated October 15, 2026

Dinner is done and the plates are getting scraped into the sink. Somewhere around the third one, the disposal starts humming and nothing goes down. Now the sink is holding two inches of greasy water that isn’t moving.

If your garbage disposal is clogged at Thanksgiving, the appliance itself may not be broken. Often, the trouble is what went through it and collected farther down the drain. Knowing the difference can save you from replacing a disposal that still works.

Why Thanksgiving Is Hard on Kitchen Drains

During an ordinary week a small amount of food waste goes through a disposal but Thanksgiving can send a good amount through in just one afternoon: vegetables, starchy sides, meat scraps, bones, and greasy pans.

One batch may pass through without trouble. Repeated batches can collect around an existing blockage, especially when congealed fat joins the mix. That’s why a sink can seem fine during dinner and back up during the next day’s cleanup.

What a Garbage Disposal Actually Does

A garbage disposal does not chop food with spinning knife blades. A rotating plate uses impellers to push scraps against a stationary grind ring, breaking them into smaller particles. Running water then carries the particles into the drainpipe.

“Many people think a garbage disposal works like a blender, with spinning blades chopping and breaking down the waste. In reality garbage disposals work in a different way – and there are NO blades involved.” InSinkErator’s explanation of the grinding mechanism

The distinction matters. The disposal grinds food; the drain line must carry it away. A motor can run perfectly while grease or food waste blocks a pipe downstream. Replacing the appliance won’t clear that pipe.

What Not to Put in a Garbage Disposal at Thanksgiving

Disposals vary in grinding power, so check your model’s instructions. For a busy holiday kitchen, though, these are four things we’d keep out, regardless of what the motor can handle.

Turkey Fat, Grease, and Gravy

Warm drippings may flow easily through the sink, then cool and collect along the pipe. More food waste can stick to that buildup. Importantly: hot water doesn’t make the fat disappear; it can carry it farther before it cools.

“NEVER dispose of grease (including fryer grease), fat or oil into sinks or floor drains

NEVER use garbage disposals for uncooked meat, coffee grounds, or any other waste that is difficult to biodegrade…” – Anne Arundel County’s Department of Public Works

Anne Arundel County also warns residents not to put fats, oils, or grease down drains. Always let drippings cool in a container and put them in the trash.

Potato Peels, Rice, and Starchy Sides

A handful of scraps is different from a whole holiday meal’s preparation. Large quantities of potato peels, rice, or pasta can collect in the trap or an already-restricted line. Scrape the bulk into the trash instead of feeding it through the disposal.

Celery, Corn Husks, and Turkey Skin

Stringy vegetable scraps can snag around internal parts or resist grinding. Turkey skin adds slippery, fatty waste to an already busy drain. Keep the fibrous trimmings and skin out of the sink.

Bones and Hard Pits

Hard objects can lodge in the grinding chamber and stop the rotating plate. Some powerful disposals are rated to handle small bones, but a holiday cleanup is no time to test yours. Put bones and pits in the trash.

Garbage Disposal Humming but Not Working? Try This First

A hum without grinding often means the rotating plate is jammed. Switch it off immediately. Repeatedly running a jammed motor can trip its overload protector.

  1. Disconnect power. Unplug the disposal or switch off its circuit breaker. Don’t rely only on the wall switch.
  2. Look for an obstruction. Use a flashlight. If you see a bone or utensil, remove it with tongs or pliers. Never put your hand inside.
  3. Free the jam using your model’s instructions. Some disposals have a socket underneath for a correctly sized hex wrench. Others are freed through the sink opening with a manufacturer’s unjamming tool or wooden spoon handle. Don’t force an unfamiliar mechanism.
  4. Check the overload reset. Once the jam is clear, follow your manual to locate and press the reset button, if your model has one. Allow a hot motor to cool first.
  5. Remove tools and test. Restore power and run the disposal briefly with cold water. If it still hums, stop and call for service.

If the disposal is completely silent, turn it off and check the reset mechanism and household breaker before assuming the motor has failed. Don’t open the wiring compartment.

Why Is My Sink Backing Up After Thanksgiving?

If the disposal spins normally but the sink drains slowly, suspect the plumbing rather than the motor. Watch for water rising into the second bowl of a double sink, gurgling at the dishwasher connection, or a backup that returns after you clear the chamber.

If other fixtures are draining poorly too, the restriction may be farther along the system. Stop running water and avoid using the dishwasher until the blockage is resolved. Skip chemical drain cleaners, which can create hazards during repair.

We provide drain cleaning and drain line services across Anne Arundel County and nearby communities. We’ll help determine whether the issue is inside the disposal or farther down the line.

Before Your Guests Arrive

Run the disposal with cold water and feed approved scraps gradually. Keep the water flowing for several seconds after grinding stops. Put fats in a container, scrape plates into the trash, and don’t use the disposal to clear a sink already full of standing water.

If your kitchen sink is slow now, address it before holiday cooking starts. A disposal is helpful, but it isn’t a substitute for a trash can.

When to Call Scardina

Thanksgiving and the Holidays can be stressful. We know because the volume of plumbing service calls spikes during the holiday weekend. The good news is that we’ve handled plumbing issues in central Maryland since 1950, including garbage disposal repairs and replacements and residential plumbing. If a jam won’t clear or the drain keeps backing up, call us to discuss available service options.

We’d rather help you identify a simple reset than replace equipment that doesn’t need replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do garbage disposals fail at Thanksgiving?

Garbage disposals can jam at Thanksgiving because large amounts of food waste enter the grinding chamber in a short period. In other cases, the disposal still works, but grease and accumulated food waste are blocking the kitchen drain.

My disposal hums but will not turn. What do I do?

A humming disposal that won’t turn is often jammed. Switch it off immediately, disconnect power, and follow your model’s instructions for removing obstructions and freeing the rotating plate. Reset the overload protector if necessary before testing the unit.

My disposal is completely dead. What do I check first?

A silent garbage disposal may have a tripped overload protector or an interrupted power supply. With the switch off, check the reset button, if present, and the household circuit breaker. If neither restores operation, have the unit inspected.

Can you put potato peels down a garbage disposal?

Some disposals can grind potato peels, but large quantities may contribute to blockages in the drainpipe. During Thanksgiving preparation, scraping substantial amounts of potato peels into the trash is the safer choice.

Is it safe to put turkey fat or gravy down the drain?

No. Turkey fat and greasy gravy can accumulate inside plumbing pipes and contribute to clogs. Collect drippings in a suitable container, allow them to cool, and dispose of the solidified fat in the trash.

Does running hot water help grease go down the drain?

Hot water may temporarily keep grease flowing, but the fat can cool and accumulate farther down the pipe. It moves the potential problem rather than eliminating it. Cooking grease belongs in a disposal container, not the sink.

Can you put celery, onion skins, or corn husks in a disposal?

Some disposals can process fibrous vegetables, but large quantities may interfere with grinding or contribute to drain blockages. Check your model’s recommendations and keep substantial amounts of fibrous trimmings out of the sink.

Do ice cubes or lemon peels actually clean a disposal?

Ice cubes may help loosen some debris, and citrus peels can temporarily freshen odors in models that permit them. Neither treatment clears grease buildup farther down a drainpipe. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

How do I know if the problem is the disposal or the drain line?

A disposal that hums without grinding may be mechanically jammed. If it spins normally but water drains slowly or backs up, the blockage is more likely in the P-trap or drain line. A plumber can locate the restriction.

How much does it cost to replace a garbage disposal?

Garbage disposal replacement costs depend on the unit’s size, features, plumbing connections, and installation requirements. A jammed disposal may only need repair. Contact Scardina for an assessment and replacement estimate rather than assuming the entire unit has failed.
